Mimicking the cafe trends of fairy floss topped teas, lattes and hot chocolates, I made a home-made hot chocolate which was topped off with dried rose petals.
I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but in Sydney, you are on the trending list if you can’t produce a latte, tea or hot chocolate which is topped off with some crazy finishing touches. For the past two years in Sydney it has been fairy floss and rose petals. But I have seen a shift towards crushed biscuits, chocolate and even fruits.
Sydney-siders have truly gone mad for interesting and unusual tasting drinks. I dare say the world of Instagram is to blame for all the weird and wonderful drinks and foods available at most cafes today, but I ain’t complaining. I’ll admit, I am a little obsessed with searching for the wildest myself LOL.
The only problem is, I live in the South West of Sydney city, around forty-five minutes away on a good day. And of course, all the weird and whacky drinks on offer are generally from the inner west of the city onwards into the CBD, so it is a little more difficult for my to sate my obsession, as travelling more than fifteen minutes for a latte hardly seems worth it. Even if it is instagrammable LOL.
So, I decided to make mine own crazy Hot Chocolate topped with fairy floss and rose petals and it completely instagrammable. Well I think it is anyway, but perhaps I am being bias.
The recipe is not really a recipe, though I wanted to share it with you all anyway, in the event you want to try something weird and wonderful, which is also great for the kids. It does work best if you best if you have a coffee machine to froth the milk, but I do have an alternative which works really well if you don’t.
What you’ll need:
- Hot Chocolate Mix – I use the Hot Chocolate drink by Cadbury, which is actually dairy-free.
- Milk – I don’t do dairy, so I use either Soy or Almond, depending on my mood.
- Cinnamon powder
- Persian Fairy Floss – this can be bought either online or at a farmers market. I purchased a chocolate flavour one, but pink seems to be very popular.
- Dried rose petals – these can be purchased online also, or at a farmers market.
- Boil a kettle of water.
- In a mug place a large dessert heap of your chocolate drink mix and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and mix.
- Once the kettle of water has boiled, fill the mug half with the hot water and stir the mixture well so it’s dissolved into the water.
- If you have a coffee machine which can froth the milk, do this now and top your mug with the milk right to the top.
- If you don’t have a coffee machine, that’s okay. What you need to do is first pour milk into a microwave-safe cup and whisk with a whisk or fork until lots of bubbles form. The idea is to add as much air into the milk as possible.
- Place into the microwave whilst the bubbles are still there and cook on high for ten to fifteen seconds, depending on the voltage of your microwave. I have a 1000w one, so ten seconds is plenty.
- Once the milk is hot, you will notice it is slightly frothy. Pour straight into your mug with the hot chocolate mixture.
- Sprinkle some chocolate powder on top of your frothed milk.
- Time to decorate.
- Place a decent amount of Fairy Floss on top of the milk and then top with a sprinkle of dried rose petals.
Viola, once crazy tasting (but oh so delicious) hot chocolate with fairy floss and rose petals.
Of course, if you are making this for kids, I would skip the rose petals and replace with chocolate. Try chopping up a Milky Way or Mars Bar into tiny bits and sprinkle that on top, they will love it. Enjoy.
